Eye Opener: CSPI
This week I did the eating green calculator. I needed .2 acres of grain/grass, 12.6 lbs of fertilizer, .1 lbs of pesticides, and 1123 lbs of manure. Next I saw what I could be doing to help out more. With these results I would eliminate all of the acres I needed, reduce by fertilizer by 10.1 lbs, take away all of the pesticides I use and reduce my manure by 934 lbs.
I really didn't say that I would reduce my diet by a lot but I guess a little goes a long way. I didn't take the pledge for a few reasons. 1) Most of the animal products I get are for free. My fiances family raises beef cattle and give it to me for free. I know what they do with their cattle and I can vouch that they are being humane. 2) I'm anemic and once and a while I need to eat something rich in iron. Being a poor college kid, I'm going to choose what's cheapest(or free) for me.

I think you made some good points to why you are not taking the pledge. I think if I was at home then I wouldn't need to do it too. It's nice that you know where you are getting your meat especially because it's from a local farm.
ReplyDeleteYou made valid points for not taking the pledge. I think that is awesome that you personal know where your meet is coming from. That in my mind benefits the environment, because you know its transportation from their farm to you. I still think doing this experience is a good idea because it made you aware of what you are eating and why.
ReplyDeleteMoney is the main reason why people stick to habits, and it's good that you know where the beef comes from and how they decide to raise it. Is the farm smaller? Because smaller animal farms are more okay than large animal farms.
ReplyDeleteAt least you have legitimate reasons behind not pledging! Mine are simply that I love dairy and meat, haha. I did, however, pledge to give up a few serving sizes of each per week. Although I don't think I ever see me becoming a vegetarian in the future, I do know that I can purchase products that come from humane, free-range farms and at least feel better about what I'm eating.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you brier, being in college it sometimes makes it hard to afford organic options and it makes me sad. Hopefully, someday, organic food will be cheaper!
ReplyDeleteThe pledge was a big commitment. We are all poor college students but along with that it seems you have the right resources to continue eating healthy and know what you're putting into your own body.
